Advocacy Initiatives

Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. helps support its members and allies through organized campaigns aimed at promoting fair and equitable hiring practices, and ensuring a healthy and positive workplace environment for tradeswomen.

Respectful Workplaces

A new pilot program will seek to improve apprenticeship retention rates among women and people of color in the highway construction trades.

With funding from from the Federal Highway Administration through the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Workforce Development program, Oregon Tradeswomen will develop a program to increase apprenticeship retention rates among women and people of color by improving workplace culture. Funding for program comes

The project will target managers, supervisors, foremen, journey workers, and apprentices to increase on-the-job-site awareness of the expectations of respectful workplaces through improved communication and behavior change.  In addition, project leaders will develop training for bystander intervention and other avenues for addressing disrespectful or discriminatory treatment on the job.

Community Benefits Agreement

Oregon Tradeswomen pushed for inclusion of journey level tradeswomen in contract language. A historic partnership between the Carpenters, Operating Engineers, Building Trades, Pre-Apprenticeship Programs and Community-Based Organizations. The agreement reflects a respect for community expertise.

Components of the MAWE CBA

Training Fund

  • Owners and employers must put money aside to provide construction training opportunities for people of color and women.

Workforce Diversity Goals

  • 15% goals for Women and 20% people of color
  • Federal goals for the metropolitan area are 6.9% for women and 4.5% for minorities.

Oversight Committee

  • Representatives from Unions, project owners, contractors and community groups will meet on an equal plain to resolve disputes, monitor worker utilization and diversity and administer the Community Construction Training Fund.

National Taskforce on Tradeswomen Issues

Oregon Tradeswomen serves on the Steering Committee for the National Taskforce on Tradeswomen Issues (TWTF). In this role we help provide staffing for leadership committees, provide input on national policy work, and assist in planning the annual Women Build Nations conference.

The National Taskforce on Tradeswomen Issues is a coalition of tradeswomen organizations, tradeswomen, and industry partners that strive to achieve access, opportunity, and equity for women in blue-collar careers.

Tradeswomen Leadership Institute

Oregon Tradeswomen will not hold the Tradeswomen Leadership Institute (TLI) in 2018. A dedicated team of volunteers are in the process of evaluating the event and working to create a stronger leadership development component. Please expect TLI to return in 2019.
