Workshops

Oregon Tradeswomen offers fun introductions to highly skilled, high-paying rewarding careers in the trades. Designed specifically for middle and high school students, our mobile, interactive workshops happen at your site either during or after school. Groups should be no more than 20 students and at least half should be girls.

These 50 minute workshops give students a chance to use hands on tools used in the trades, talk with tradeswomen role models, and see real-world examples of math and science. Students learn that trades careers offer financial independence with concrete rewards. With less than 3% of the trades workforce being female, these workshops can help confront stereotypes and provide perspective on tradesworkers.

For middle and high school students in the Portland area:

Framing your Future - Students work with a woman carpenter to build picture frames. The activity involves following directions, measuring lengths of wooden molding, making 45-degree angle cuts with miter saws and boxes, and gluing the pieces together. This workshop is great for any math class - explaining how to use a tape measurer accurately & identifying right angles.

Light up Your Life - A woman electrician describes her experiences entering the field, and teaches students how to safely wire a light and switch. Students work in teams of two, and get to put together their own set, then screw in a light bulb and flip the switch. This workshop is an excellent complement to a natural science curriculum in which students explore electricity and conductivity.

Pipes and Prints - While explaining her day-to-day career, an apprentice female plumber leads this workshop on following a blueprint to build a house-shaped desktop file holder. A fantastic fit with any problem-solving or spatial-reasoning curriculum - great for geometry or science classes!

Other opportunities:
The Annual Math, Science and Technology Conference for Middle School Girls is coordinated by the PAVTEC Gender Equity Team and co-sponsored by the Oregon Department of Education, Intel, and PAVTEC. The PAVTEC Gender Equity Team is composed of volunteers - some active educators, some retired educators and other lay people who have a passion to promote the opportunities for women in non-traditional careers.

The purpose of this event is to encourage middle school girls to aspire to high achievement. The conference provides a day of exposure to positive role model and hands-on experiences that hopefully impact these girls as they return to their school and home environments.

Expanding Your Horizons. This annual career conference for girls in grades 6-12 will be held at the University of Portland. Serving girls in Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington for more than twenty years, this Saturday event offers three student workshops to learn about many different jobs and meet amazing women. For more information, visit http://www.eyhportland.org or call Nancy Huppertz at 503-691-1166.

Women in Trades Career Fair Sponsored by Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. and NECA/IBEW Electrical Training Center, this event is held yearly in mid to late spring.
