Portland Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build decent, affordable housing. The houses are then sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.
Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Habitat for Humanity is a great place to learn new building skills and give back to the community. The Habitat for Humanity International web site contains more information on Habitat's history, mission, volunteer opportunities and contact information for other Habitat affiliates around the world.

REACH Community Development
REACH was established in 1982 by a group of community activists concerned about housing conditions in the Buckman neighborhood. Today, REACH serves seven inner southeast neighborhoods and provides affordable housing for close to 1000 people. As it has grown, REACH has continually developed programs that address the specific needs of its service area.

Hundreds of people volunteer for REACH each year. They offer a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. For general information on volunteering, contact Laurel at 503-231-0682 x134 or llyon@reachcdc.org,

Other Opportunities

9th Annual Math, Science and Technology Conference for Middle School Girls will be April 16, 2004 at the Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus. This event is coordinated by the PAVTEC Gender Equity Team and co-sponsored by the Oregon Department of Education, Intel, and PAVTEC. The PAVTEC Gender Equity Team is composed of volunteers - some active educators, some retired educators and other lay people who have a passion to promote the opportunities for women in non-traditional careers

The purpose of this event is to encourage middle school girls to aspire to high achievement. The conference provides a day of exposure to positive role model and hands-on experiences that hopefully impact these girls as they return to their school and home environments.

Expanding Your Horizons. This annual career conference for girls in grades 6-12 will be held April 17, 2004 at the University of Portland.
