Trades Offer Girls Options – TO GO

Workshops Educational Materials Lesson Plans Resources Volunteer

Educational Materials

Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. has material that explains what students can do while in school to prepare for a specific trade career. The reproducible PDF documents below advocate for students to take math and science classes, volunteer for building and construction projects, and research training centers to look into apprenticeships.

Much of the information of how to get into the trades is not easily accessible for many students, especially girls. Until 1972, shop classes were mostly off-limits to girls (just as many home economics classes were girls only). It was not until 1978 that apprenticeships were required to let women in, and even today, women make up only 2.8% of the trades workforce.

The following handouts can be used to identify the next steps to a particular trades career:

Sheet Metalsheet metal worker

Electricianelectrician

Carpentercarpenters

Plumberplumber

Painter (to come)painter

Steamfittersteamfitter

Heavy Equipment Operatorheavy equipment operator
