Steamfitter
The Work
Steamfitters install piping and tubing made of carbon steel, copper,
plastic, glass or other metals using a variety of processes including
brazing,
welding, screwing, gluing, bending and mechanical joining.
Steamfitters
install valves, controls, pumps, vessels and hangers, as well as
refrigeration
and air-conditioning equipment, compressors, coils and boilers.
The Working Conditions
The work is done indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Steamfitters work in buildings, trenches, roofs, from scaffolding, on
ladders
and inside tanks. Hazards include exposure to chemicals, gases,
fumes
and loud noise.
Wages
Union
Apprentice: $10.80 per hour
Journey level: $30.85 per hour
