Sheet Metal Worker
The Work
Sheet metal workers fabricate and install fittings and duct work used
for heating ventilation and air-conditioning systems in residential,
commercial
and industrial buildings. Projects include commercial kitchens
and
industrial mills built with stainless steel and heavy metals,
architectural
metal roofing, gutters, siding and ornamental work. Sheet metal
workers
set up and operate shears, press brakes, hand brakes, bending rolls,
welding
machines, and other equipment to cut, form and attach metal. They
use power shears, press brakes, welding machines of all types,
grinders,
drills, power saws and a large assortment of hand tools.
The Working Conditions
The work is performed indoors and outdoors often on scaffolding and
ladders, in awkward positions and cramped spaces.
Wages
Union
Apprentice: $14.62 per hour
Journey person: $29.73 per hour
Open Shop
Apprentice: $8.63 per hour
Journey person: $17.26 per hour
