Local 290 Plumbers and Steamfitters Apprenticeship Our program offers careers in the plumbing, pipefitting and HVAC industry covering residential, commercial and industrial projects. Beginning apprentices start at 35 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase usually every six months, until the journey-level rate is achieved. This apprenticeship lasts five years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 216 hours per year of classroom training and at least 1600 hours of on-the-job training per year. Journey worker plumbers are required to hold a license and currently earn $35.69 per hour with excellent health and retirement benefits. Foremen, general foremen and senior general foremen earn considerably more. Jobs in the construction industry are in no danger of being shipped overseas. The long-term outlook in the piping trades is excellent. The piping trades offer virtually unlimited career possibilities for people willing to work to achieve their goals.
