Painter
The Work
Painters prepare surfaces ranging from wood to metal and masonry and
apply paint and other types of wall coverings including vinyl, fabric
and
aluminum. Painters identify substances, evaluate causes of
existing
coating problems, prepare surfaces and apply appropriately sequenced
coatings.
This job requires knowledge of building materials, surface preparation
techniques, coatings application and product specifications.
Painters
use sanding equipment, spray equipment, ladder/scaffold and aerial lift
equipment.
The Working Conditions
Painters work indoors and out, often at heights, on residential,
industrial
and commercial properties. They must be able to lift and
transport
five gallon coating containers of 50 to 60 pounds. Because
preparation
work is often dirty, with high concentrations of airborne dust and
debris,
with paint that soils clothing and unprotected skin, painters use
protective
equipment such as goggles and respirators and wear protective
clothing.
Some travel may be involved.
