2017 Women in Trades Career Fair

Thank you to all of the 68 schools around Oregon and Washington who have registered for the 25th Women in Trades Career Fair! We have reached capacity and have closed registration for Friday, May 19th. If you have any questions about your school registration, permission forms, etc., contact Amanda Thomas, Event Manager, at 503.335.8200 x 28 or [email protected]

Although our school day is full, we encourage you to attend on Saturday, May 20 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Attendance is free, parking is free, on-site child care is free, and we will run a shuttle from the Gateway transit Center to the event site!


Volunteers are the power behind the Women in Trades Career Fair; OTI depends on the generous support of over 100 volunteers giving more than 500 hours of their time to produce the Fair every year.

SHUTTLE SCHEDULE for Saturday, May 20, 2017

A FREE shuttle will run from the TriMet Gateway Transit Center to the Women in Trades Career Fair at these times:

8:45 am

2:00 pm ** This is the last shuttle of the day going to the Fair

The shuttle will leave the Fair to go back to the TriMet Gateway Transit Center at these times:

Explore the possibilities for innovation in construction and experience virtual reality with the HTC Vive. Hear from several women in different construction careers and learn how you can impact the industry from the inside out.


NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center:  Information at the Speed of Light

Three 50-minute workshops:

Build a transmitter and receiver using light and understand how it can become sound and digital information.

Learn how fiber works by building a light display the uses a switch, LED, fiber, 9V battery.

R&H Construction:  Construction 101

Try your hand at six different activities! Learn some of the most important basic construction tasks, like hammering and pulling nails, measuring, and making sure the site is safe and tidy.


Sheet Metal Institute:  Flower Pots
Room 10

Build a sheet metal flower pot!  Use hand tools to assemble the pieces and a hand break to bend the metal.  At the end, you will take home your creation!


UA Local 290, Plumbers, Steamfitters, HVAC/R, and Marine Fitters:  PVC Pipe
Lab 2B  and Room 6

Cutting and measuring pipe is a daily job for Steamfitters, Plumbers, and HVAC/R workers. The PVC pipe workshop uses the most common type of piping, Poly Vinyl Chloride pipe and fittings to create fun and functional projects for you to take home.

In this workshop you will put your hands onto the copper pipe that is hidden in the walls of many, many buildings carrying potable water that we use every day.  Plumbers will help you cut, prepare and solder copper pipe with flame torches.


UA Local 290, Plumbers, Steamfitters, HVAC/R, and Marine Fitters:  Welding

Stick, Rod and Arc welding are all names of the type of welding you will be using to “write” your initials or “draw” a shape on steel plate in the welding workshop.  Close toed shoes are required as well as dressing in provided safety gear.


Umatilla Robotics:  Build a Lego Robot with the Umatilla Robotics Team

We will build and program Lego robots like First Lego League teams. Our 2017 season robot, Dewey, will be brought up and can be driven around.

Come check out our virtual reality booth and see some of what we do. The proposed Vancouver Energy terminal provides critical infrastructure that enables the safe transfer of North American crude oil from rail to ship, and ultimately the manufacturing of transportation fuels for our daily lives at West Coast refineries.


Washington County Sheriff’s Office:  Self Awareness Workshop

Sign up for 50-minute sessions starting at the top of the hour
This workshop will introduce women to a variety of topics and techniques that address their personal safety. At the end of this workshop, women will be empowered to predict, identify, and avoid violent situations.

Learn about the unique and intricate skills of the line worker trade! Experience the heights and the thrilling work of a line worker from inside a bucket truck.  Strap on boots and climbing gaffs with an experienced pole partner to climb a power pole, or use 100,000 voltage rated hot sticks on overhead power lines used to build and maintain high voltage electrical lines.

Ever wish that you could touch the sky? Roofers and Waterproofers do that every day. Come be a roofer for a day. Make your own green roof, find and patch a leak in a roof, and work with a Roofer installing modified roofing with a real torch.

Oregon & SW Washington Mason Trades:  Bricklaying Apprenticeship
Would you like to try your hand at building a brick wall? We will be ready to give you that chance with all the supplies to do so. You will also learn about all the great opportunities available to you in the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Apprenticeship.


Washington County:  Road Painting 101
Live hands on demonstration and ability to participate and experience sitting on the painting truck. Join two of our experienced female employees on the journey of road painting.
