2016 Women in Trades Career Fair

The largest non-traditional career fair of its kind, Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. produces the interactive Women in Trades Career Fair to increase the overall number of women working in the trades and to help fill the imminent gap in the labor force that will be created with record-levels of upcoming retirements of skilled trades people.

Produced annually since 1993, this unique, industry sponsored and volunteer powered event offers dozens of hands-on activities designed to introduce women and girls to the possibility of a future career in the trades.

Participants will build a tool box. They will learn how to read plans and use a variety of hand tools while making a useful product. In addition, the participants will learn about the opportunities provided for high school students at the Skills Center’s construction program.

Help recreate the Portland Skyline. With panoramic pictures to use as their inspiration, you will be able to use LEGOs to showcase our Portland spirit. For those brave enough to try their hand at programming there will be opportunities to create moving pieces for our display.

NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center – Electrical Careers!

Learn about low-voltage electricity through work with fiber optic cables. You will receive supplies for building a fiber optic display. The supplies are: 9v, 6 plastic fiber strands bonded together, switch, LED, and stand for their design. Each part will require you to work with your hands to build the display.

The Girls of Umatilla Robotics

Participants will be able to engineer paper cars or buildings out of cups with the girls of Umatilla Robotics. The will also have their robot “Sir Sam” fresh off of his performance at the FIRST Robotics World Championships in St. Louis to provide a demonstration and as an example of the engineering that goes into the build.
